Our PSHE curriculum at Timberley
As part of your child's educational experience at Timberley Academy, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive and bespoke programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education. We aim to provide children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.
At Timberley Academy, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is a planned programme of learning where the children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to keep themselves healthy and safe. PSHE provides children with the building blocks for them to develop healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This sits alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy, both physically and mentally.
As part of our whole school approach, PSHE develops the qualities and attributes that children need to manage opportunities, challenges and responsibilities as they grow up, enabling them to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our effective PSHE programme enables staff to tackle barriers to learning and raise aspirations for our pupils.
At Timberley Academy, it is our intent to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum that aims to assist children and young people to prepare for adult life by supporting them through their physical, emotional and moral development, and helping them to understand themselves, respect others and form and sustain healthy relationships.
This will be implemented by creating a high quality, age-appropriate programme of study that is bespoke to our school and our children. The two main core themes of our PSHE programme of study focuses on Health & Wellbeing and Relationships Education. A third core theme, Living in the Wider World, is also an integral aspect of our curriculum.
The school understands its responsibilities in relation to the Equality Act 2010 and as such actively promotes respect and tolerance within our curriculum as part of our ‘Equality & Diversity’ lessons. We also believe it is vital children learn about themselves, including the physical and emotional changes they will encounter as they age, which we meet in our ‘Growing Up’ lessons which is a part of both Relationships and Sex Education.
All children will study:
Autumn Term - Health & Wellbeing
Spring Term - Relationships
Summer Term - Living in the Wider World & Growing Up
